Master of Arts in Teaching – Initial Licensure

The MAT program in Initial Licensure is designed for students pursuing a new career direction who have already obtained a Bachelor’s degree. This program provides students with extensive knowledge on teaching, classroom management, assessment informed instruction, and differential instruction. The College of Education offers three concentration areas for students interested in pursuing this degree choice: Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Special Education.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Making Subject Matter Comprehensible to all students including culturally and linguistically diverse students and students with exceptionalities
  2. Planning instruction and designing learning experiences for ALL students including culturally and linguistically diverse students and students with exceptionalities

  6. Communicating and Collaborating with Families and Communities,
  7. Developing as a Professional Educator – using reflection to grow as an educator

  • Select First time user account creation.
  • Create a Login ID and PIN for the application process.
  • Complete the application, pay the $40 application fee, and Submit.

In addition to the Graduate Division Admission requirements, the student in this program must also:

  1. Submit an application for admission to the College of Education
  2. The completed application form must include the following:
    • Date of Final Admission status into the Graduate Division;
    • A completed degree plan signed with an advisor in the College of Education;
    • Three letters of recommendation: two academic and one other, preferably from an employer;
    • A brief educational autobiography addressing the question, “Why Teach?”;
    • Taken and passed the National Evaluation Series (NES) test as of January 2015
    • Complete FBI background clearance;
    • Completed Professional Behaviors and Dispositions Assessment.

To uphold the integrity of the College of Education’s standards, and to ensure the success of students, the College of Education consistently monitors and assesses student progress. The following prerequisites must be upheld by students in the College of Education in order for them to continue to make progress in the program:

  • Students are required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • No more than one C grade in program coursework is permitted
  • Elements of the Teacher Education Program outcomes are monitored and assessed
  • Students are required to receive a passing score (220) on the NES Essental Academic Skills Tests in:
    1. Reading
    2. Writing
    3. Mathematics
  • Students must pass Professional Behaviors and Dispositions Assessments

The completion of the program is contingent upon students successfully executing the exit criteria, which should take place at the end of the student’s Practice Teaching semester. The exit criteria is composed of: (1) passing the Comprehensive Exam, (2) completing the Teacher Educational Exit Survey (EBI-TEES), (3) passing the NES content test and the NES professional knowledge test, (4) completing the Professional Behaviors and Dispositions Assessment, and (5) providing a letter of recommendation in support of the student’s completion of the program.
