Bilingual Education (BLED) Program
The Bilingual Education (BLED) Program at Western New Mexico University prepares future educators to effectively teach in multilingual and multicultural classrooms across New Mexico. As a teaching field (endorsement) within the bachelor’s degree, the program requires 24 credit hours of coursework, similar to other endorsement areas, along with successful completion of La Prueba, the New Mexico state assessment for bilingual certification.
Grounded in the linguistic and cultural diversity of New Mexico, the program recognizes multilingualism as a strength, resource, and right. In addition to Spanish bilingual education, WNMU is proud to offer a Navajo bilingual program, honoring Indigenous languages and supporting the preservation and advancement of Native communities across the state.
The BLED program is designed for teacher candidates completing their undergraduate degree and seeking to add a bilingual endorsement to their New Mexico teaching license. This endorsement prepares candidates to work effectively with emergent bilingual students and to meet the needs of linguistically diverse learners in a variety of educational settings.
Program Outcomes
Candidates in the BLED program are prepared to:
- Value and apply knowledge that leads to effective teaching practices for diverse student populations
- Understand and implement methodologies that support first, second, and simultaneous language acquisition
- Support and advocate for primary language instruction and bilingual education programs
- Meet the instructional needs of bilingual learners in multilingual settings
- View multilingualism as an asset, resource, and fundamental right
- Recognize and support the linguistic rights of students in New Mexico, including speakers of Spanish and Indigenous languages
Through rigorous coursework, field-based experiences, and a strong emphasis on culturally and linguistically sustaining practices, the BLED program equips future educators with the skills, knowledge, and dispositions necessary to serve New Mexico’s diverse communities.
Graduate Bilingual Education Certificate
The Graduate Bilingual Education Certificate at Western New Mexico University is designed for licensed teachers who wish to add a bilingual endorsement to their existing New Mexico teaching license. Grounded in the multilingual and multicultural context of New Mexico, the program prepares educators to effectively serve emergent bilingual students while recognizing multilingualism as an asset, resource, and right.
To earn the Bilingual Education Certificate, teachers complete 12 credit hours of graduate-level bilingual education coursework and pass La Prueba, the New Mexico state assessment for bilingual certification. The coursework focuses on language development, instructional methodologies, and culturally and linguistically sustaining practices that support bilingual learners in diverse educational settings.
A key advantage of this certificate is that all 12 graduate credits fully apply toward the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with a Specialization.
