Spanish Language Courses at Western New Mexico University
Welcome to the Spanish Program at Western New Mexico University. Below is a quick overview of course structure, expectations, and how to get started.
Course Format
Most beginning to advanced Spanish courses is offered in two accelerated 8-week sessions in face-to-face, online, asynchronous or hybrid formats—allowing you to progress more quickly toward a Spanish minor or major.
Hybrid courses combine in-person and online learning through Canvas and VHL Central. Students collaborate across sections, and meeting schedules may vary. Check Canvas announcements regularly; any required campus meetings will be announced at least two weeks in advance.
Getting Started
To begin your course:
- Check Canvas
- Read your instructor’s welcome announcement and complete the required survey using your WNMU email.
- Take the Placement Test
- Complete the test through Canvas and email a screenshot of your score to your instructor.
- Complete the Syllabus Quiz
- This brief quiz ensures you understand course policies, grading, and expectations.
- Access Course Materials
- Connect to your digital textbook through Canvas (Modules → Course Materials → VHL Central). Create an account if you are new to VHL.
- Introduce Yourself
- Post in the discussion board to connect with classmates.
- Explore the Course
- Review modules, structure, and introductory videos.
Participation & Technology
All courses require active engagement. You will need:
- A computer and reliable high-speed internet
- Canvas for assignments, discussions, and course materials
- Zoom (via Mustang Express) for optional sessions
- Google Docs (linked to your WNMU account) for collaboration, make sure you click on the Shared bottom and add your instructor.
- Microsoft Office (free through Mustang Express)

For B.A. students, the second language requirement may be fulfilled through upper-division Spanish coursework or approved alternatives such as placement testing or CLEP.
